Tongue in cheek…not the same as foot in mouth
Generally, it’s been my perception that people take themselves far too seriously. You only have to look at the kind of things we do in the name of relaxation to see what I mean. Take for instance the woman on the “Stairmaster.” With beads of sweat trickling down her face, she glances at the computer positioned in front of her to check her cardiovascular output, number of calories she is burning while turning the pages of a book she is reading at the same time. Or, how about the guy who gets up at 4:00 am to take his morning jog in weather that keeps the postman off the streets? Relaxation? You’ve got to be kidding. This sort of relaxation reminds me of my great grandmother who used to sit into the wee hours of the night, with her eyes closed from exhaustion, knitting mittens to keep the kid’s hands from freezing on the two mile walk to school the next day.
So, maybe our sermons include a little tongue-in-cheek. Relax and give yourself a break. Laugh a little. Don’t be quite so serious. And try to remember that even in times when you question who God is, that whoever God is, it isn’t you.
